The Governor Carpenter homestead in Guilford, VT is looking for its next Steward. Constructed in 1772 by Benjamin Carpenter, the first Lt. Governor of Vermont, this historic property has been lovingly cared for by the present owners for decades. They have assembled over 260 acres during their tenure to create a diverse parcel of land that includes fields, forest, fruit orchards, miles of stonewall, and about 6 miles of hiking trails. Across a dirt road from the home is a lovely pond, with the remnants of an old barn foundation. Adding to the sense of history is the tradition that Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys camped out in the enclosed garden near the house. The house itself, with its center chimney, is gracious and charming. An unusual feature is the squared off Palladian window over the front door. Only three similar examples are known to exist in Vermont, all in the vicinity of Guilford. The large fireplace in the living room is adjoined by a beehive oven; there are four additional working fireplaces, as well as a Franklin stove in the kitchen. While there is 21st century plumbing in the house today, the original one-hole privy is still in the carriage house across the breezeway from the house. History, Charm and Character. This is a piece of American history that can be yours.
